organized entryways - Clear the clutter for an enticing entrance.
The old saying, "you never get a second chance to make a first impression" applies to your home, too. An attractive and organized entrance tells guests you take pride in your home and you're eager to share it with them.

Clear the Closet

Plant a Tree An organized hall closet is key to maintaining a clean entrance. Clear the closet of all non-essential coats and other items, and keep plenty of empty hangers for guest coats. Devote at least one shelf to hats, gloves and scarves, and place a rug with rubber backing on the floor where wet boots and shoes can go. Install a closet light so you can see everything and keep it well organized.

Plant a Tree

An old-fashioned hall tree can be an important element of an enticing entrance. Use your hall tree for wet coats and hats, but hang them up in the closet as soon as they're dry. Place an attractive umbrella stand next to your hall tree to keep your umbrellas in a central place and easily accessible on rainy days.

Run a Rug

A runner rug should be the first thing everyone steps on when they enter your home, even if you have carpeting. Choose a neutral color that hides dirt, and make sure it's thick enough to soak up water from wet boots. If you have hardwood floors, use non-slip backing with the rug to prevent it from sliding and causing someone to fall.

Box It

A furniture-quality box or bench (with storage underneath) can be a great place to store items out of sight. Position the bench near the runner rug so you don't have to walk across your floor to take off wet boots. Lay a rug with rubber backing on the bottom of the box so you can store wet boots and hats in it if you want.

A storage bench can also be used to house other items, such as extra blankets or books. Lining the bench with cedar closet wood will help protect your items from moth damage, and adding a few decorative pillows on top can create an additional seating area.

Shoe Rack Solution

To keep shoes from piling up around the door and scuffing your floors or walls create a custom shoe rack. This one uses a picket fence for an attractive and functional addition to any entryway.

Picket Fence Shoe Rack:

Materials:
2 2x4 blocks of wood
1 section of picket fence, cut into two 3 picket pieces
Paint color of your choice
Hammer
Nails

Instructions:

  1. If you choose to paint your fence pieces and 2x4’s sand first with a fine-grit sandpaper.
  2. Add one or two coats of paint, letting dry between each coat.
  3. Using the fence pieces as a top and bottom shelves nail two 2x4’s on the far ends of either side to create 4 legs to hold the shelves.

Have a Seat- By Patrick Brown

Have a Seat For a high-traffic entryway that never seems to slow down, try crafting this easy-to-make shoe rack that doubles as a bench—perfect for sitting down to tie shoes tight.

Materials:
2 matching nightstands, at least 12” deep
3 pieces stair tread, 4” long x 12” wide x 1” thick (select a finish that is similar to your night stands)
6 metal corner braces
6 1/2” woodscrews
Wood furniture spray paint

Instructions:
  1. Take two of the metal corner braces and install one on each of the nightstands at 24” high, mounted parallel to the top of the furniture piece.

Tip: As you’re constructing your bench, envision that you are constructing a bed frame. Your metal corner braces should be mounted to the sidewall of each nightstand, with the braces facing each other when placed side by side.

  2. Continue with the next two metal corner braces, mounting them 7” lower and at a slight downward angle (approximately 30°). Repeat this step with the final two braces, mounted another 7” down and at the same downward angle.
  3. Place the two nightstands approximately 4 feet apart with the metal corner braces facing toward each other. Mount a piece of stair tread on each of the brace pairs, with the rounded—or “bull nose”—edge facing outward.
  4. Using woodscrews, fasten the stair tread pieces to the braces from underneath.
  5. Once constructed, spray paint your furniture piece—try a deep, rich hue like espresso—and let dry before positioning it within your home.
